For centuries, the local population\u2019s main livelihood was fishing. Alongside that, the area played a very important role as a hub for boat-borne mail transport to Finland via \u00c5land. <span>More or less organised transfer of letters and people had taken place since the Middle Ages, but it was only with Axel Oxenstierna\u2019s establishment of Sweden\u2019s modern postal service in 1636 that mail transport across the Sea of \u00c5land gained momentum. The Crown-controlled operation was divided into so-called post routes. Passing the mail from station to station became an important sideline and source of income for many farmers on the mainland as well as in the archipelago, though often a risky one. During the Russian raids of 1719 the village was burned down<\/span>, but it was rebuilt shortly thereafter. Another fire in the mid-18th century (likely 1754) destroyed Grisslehamn at this site, and the Crown then decided to move the new construction to present-day Grisslehamn, after which this place was named Gamla Grisslehamn. Today, traces of the village\u2019s origins remain here in the form of old crofts and boathouses.<\/span><\/p><p>In the bay there is a bathing jetty and a simple organised bathing spot that is popular with local residents.<\/p><strong>Plot and outdoor space<\/strong><br\/><p>This is a rocky\/natural plot of 2,018 sq m in an elevated position with partial views towards the Sea of \u00c5land. Beside the existing house there is a small lawn and space for parking. The main building may possibly include a basement depending on its siting on the plot. In addition, an Attefall house (currently max 30 sq m) and small sheds (friggebodar) totalling max 15 sq m are permitted.<\/p><strong>Boat<\/strong><br\/><p>Initially, it is best to keep the boat on a trailer and launch and retrieve it when used\u2014partly due to a limited number of berths, but also out of respect for the Sea of \u00c5land, weather and winds.
